ST THOMAS MORE BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY
The school is a community in which behaviour is based on mutual respect and consideration for others. The class teacher, who knows each child well, is responsible for the care of the children in his or her class.
Our school rules promote a safe and secure environment.
We expect the children to :
follow all directions given by members of staff
be honest and truthful
keep hands, feet and voice to themselves
not bring harmful object(s) into school
leave mobile phones (if needed) in the front office
speak politely
open doors for others
listen quietly
walk in the building
wear the school uniform correctly
During the day, all staff members promote a feeling of positive self-worth in various ways, including giving positive recognition of personal achievement and providing opportunities to develop talents and gifts.
Assemblies are a celebration for the whole school and help to deepen each child's faith. They provide an opportunity for children to display positive attitudes about themselves as members of the Catholic school community. We have a special asssembly each week at which children receive stickers and certificates.
Citizen Cups are presented at the end of the school year to children who show outstanding citizenship skills.
We have a house system in the school and all the children have been divided into four houses: St Catherine's, St Joseph's, St Nicholas' and St Theresa's. Children are awarded house points for good behaviour and good work and, later, for inter-house competitions.
The School Council has representatives from each class. The representatives bring issues and problems to meetings and take feedback back to classrooms.
We encourage older children to care for, and look after, younger children. The Year 6 Buddy Bunch helps children with friendship problems. Year 6 children also help midday supervisors care for younger children during lunchtimes.
There is a card system which consists of three coloured cards. Each child begins the day with a green card. If they continue to keep the green card for the week they will receive a green sticker. Golden Time on Friday is also used to reward good behaviour.
If a child forgets to follow school rules they are usually given a reminder and encouraged to apologise to the person concerned. They may receive a yellow card which is used as a warning.
Children, who choose to continue to disregard school rules, will receive a red card, and appropriate consequences. If a teacher is concerned the parents are informed.
There are a minority of children who do not respond to school consequences or who show aggressive or disruptive behaviour. In these situations the following procedure applies:-
Letter home requesting a meeting with parents
Behaviour Card/Contact Book with behaviour plan
Lunchtime Internal exclusion - 1 week
Lunchtime External exclusion - 1 week
Meeting with Mrs van Dam with a view to a fixed term exclusion
Children will be excluded if they use violent behaviour.
All incidents are recorded in the class Incident/Accident book. The books are monitored by the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher.
As we must endeavour to promote good role models at all times, children who show poor behaviour during the week will receive their award for academic or sporting achievements in the Headteacher's office rather than at an assembly.
Only children who are well behaved will be allowed to take part in team events and represent the school in outside activities, as well as being allowed leading parts in assemblies or performances.
BULLYING
When incidents of any form of suspected bullying occur, they must always be reported to the teacher or headteacher. All reports of bullying behaviour are investigated and resolved individually. Children are reassured that they speak to adults if they have any concerns.
